Shiny, shiny, more shiny, plus characters and plot!

I downloaded the Pilot for the simple reason that we had just gotten the TiVo all hooked up and registered and, at the time, the episode was free. Well, okay, it also helped that I wanted to say I'd seen it first, and I wanted to see how this whole downloadable TV thing worked.

I had seen previews for Chuck. The network had hyped it up so much, it was impossible to have missed it, but the previews did not impress me. I had no expectation of this show. I was thinking I would get halfway through the Pilot and then decide to watch something else.

The promos were wrong, wrong, wrong. They totally failed to highlight all of the wonderful things about this show -- about this episode! It was smart and funny, with good performances and writing and directing, but the thing that most blew me away was the lighting and color.

The DOP for Chuck deserves some serious recognition. The show looks simply incredible. It's so bright, it's so colorful, and everything is lit in such a way that it reads beautifully on the screen. I probably got lost in just oohing and ahhing at the technical accomplishment of making a show this bright look this good a bit too much. Normally, shows seem to tend more towards dark, it seems to be somewhat easier to make dark look good.

I wasn't too distracted by the shininess -- I still had enough presence of mind to admire the characters and story. Chuck is endearing, very human, and the cast of crazy characters around him only serve to underscore how much of a person Chuck is, a person like any of us. It's probably the show's strongest selling point (aside from the shiny). Chuck may be in a world far beyond ours, but we can picture ourselves in his place.

Plus, the show is funny, and I laughed. It's well worth watching every week.
Great show! I just hope it gets a chance.

I loved this so much I watched it online and then again on TV a week later. I hope the bean-counters give this show a chance. I'm so tired of new shows that disappear after 2 or 3 episodes. I'm sure that's why alot of people don't even bother watching in the first place.
Witty, and a Good Show

EVER SINCE NBC TIED PROMOS OF CHUCK IN WITH HEROES, SAVE THE GEEK SAVE THE WORLD, I WANTED TO SEE WHAT THIS SHOW WAS LIKE. ITS REALLY, REALLY GOOD! I LIKE THE STORY LINE, REAL GUY THROWN IN OVER HIS HEAD. THE ACTING, DIRECTION AND PLOT ARE ALL TOP NOTCH. IT BLENDS HUMOR AND ACTION REAL WELL! NBC COULD HAVE A REAL HIT ON THEIR HANDS! I CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE CHUCK!

As pilots go this one will make you curious to see how the show progresses. Hits all the marks well. Now to see how long it will keep our attention.
CHUCK has some great potential as a new series.

The newly out tv series CHUCK has some great potential as a tv show, and is a good tv slot for a new series on Mondays, not up against other really hot tv shows yet, so able to give it good audience creation. It seems like it really could take off, but it has to have great consistent writing. It has similarities at first glance to being like the horrendous tv show that bombed very quickly, Jake 2.0, but as long as the writers stick to good episode plot lines with some two show episodes, it could be a terrific show. The main actor playing Chuck seems good in the role, and the lead actress is definitely very beautiful too. To myself, it remains to be seen how good Adam Baldwin will be as a support actor role for it.
Good funny action spy show

Chuck looks like Greg Brady and the blond agent is a hot Marcia. Good scenes of her in her undies in the pilot and we'll probably see more of her as the series progresses. It's funny to see their take on Best Buy and their Geek Squad - "Buy More" and "Nerd Herd". Chuck's sister is a brunette hottie. Can't wait to see the next episode...
Enjoyable for someone who does not watch TV

My teenage daughter got the 1st DVD at the video rental place. I do not watch TV (other than news) and so had no interest. But, she talked me into watching the pilot. It is a very well done show with a good blend of humor, action, and developing personalities and relationships. The comedy is not that stupid situation comedy stuff (lying and then spending the rest of the show trying to cover up the lies, etc), but more in terms of oddball personalities and quirks, stereotypes hammed up for laughs, and the like. The show is more serious than that makes it sound - it focuses a lot on relationships and slowly gives more and more insight into each person. The spies are not the usual empty-shells and yet are not just the other usual of "lost lover due to some nasty killer, so internally screwed up". The spies themselves are dual-personalities with stereotypes on the one side and slowly emerging people under. The action is integrated well for the most part, and does not feel just tacked on.
So far, it has been very enjoyable to watch.
My daughter was rolling on the floor at The OC party scene takeoff parody (music, slow motion, but not quite the normal characters). There are a lot of such little parodies like that along with quite a few inside Hollywood jokes.
Worth watching in my view.
